Play Taboo online - Taboo Party vs the app or a video call
Taboo Party is a free online Taboo game: one player makes a room and friends join with a 6-character room code. It is one of three common ways to play Taboo online with friends. The others are the official Taboo app on your phone, or your own Taboo cards on a video call. Here is how they compare, quoting the app from its store listings.
| Topic | Taboo Party | Official Taboo app | Video call with cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you need | Plays in your browser with nothing to download, and also runs as a Discord Activity. | A phone or tablet app. Its App Store listing says "Requires iOS 15.0 or later." It is also on Google Play. | A deck of Taboo cards or a word list, plus a call on Zoom, Meet or Discord. |
| Cost | Joining a room is free and needs no account. Hosting needs a free account, which includes free games each month. Party Pass and Plus remove the limit. | It costs $1.99 on the App Store, with in-app purchases. Its Google Play listing also shows in-app purchases. | You need your own copy of the cards, or a word list you make yourselves. |
| Players and teams | Split the room into 2 or 3 teams. It plays best with 4 or more players. | Its listing says "Split into two teams". Its version notes say "Play together in the same place (unlimited players), or apart via video chat (up-to 6 players)". | As many people as fit on the call. You pick the teams yourselves. |
| Talking on a call | Use any voice or video call, or play in the same room. Room chat is built in. | Its listing says "Play with video chat and throw a house party on your phone!" | The call app does the talking. The describer has to keep the card hidden from the camera. |
| Timer and score | The timer, scoring and taboo reporting are built in. | Its listing says "Your team has to guess as many as possible before the timer runs out." It also says "the other team will buzz" when you say a taboo word. | Someone has to run a timer and keep score by hand. The other team listens for taboo words. |
| Word packs | Standard, Hindi and Hinglish packs, plus your own custom word packs. | Its listing says "Includes cards from the original game." and "Expand your game further with additional themed decks!" | Whatever cards or word list you have. Only the describer should see them. |
